The hotels on Century Blvd., just down the street from LAX, got together to create the Gateway Ocean Express Trolley to transport people to the downtown area of MB, the MB Village Mall or the Plaza in for beach, shopping or restaurants. This helps out people staying at those hotels, rather than staying in El Segundo or MB, have somewhere to go. The Ocean Express service is a private operation solely for the use of member businesses. There would really be no need for you to use the trolley, if staying in MB with a. There is plenty of parking in both small malls if you wanted to go shopping. As for drop off and pick up at the beach, now that summer is here the trolleys are full, and they don't drop off at the base of the pier anymore, but three blocks away.If you walked west on 17th Street, and over the hill with the big church at the top, it would be a shortcut to the beach from the hotel, and about a mile.
If you decide to drive, my suggestion is to go straight to Lot M, the large underground parking lot, a few blocks back from the beach, where you can park from 3 to 10 hours. Lots of people inland don't know about that lot for weekend parking. Bring quarters, the meter maids will be out in full force over the 4th!There is a Manhattan Bread and Bagel shop just across the street from the Hawthorne Suites. You can buy lots of things including sandwiches and drinks to take to the beach.
Also a block away is a Target Store, where you can pick up beach chairs, suntan lotion, food, etc.On July 4th, is having a Fireworks display shot over the ocean. If you sit on the beach to watch, bring a sweatshirt or jacket. Took the shuttle from Marriott to beach with my family on Father's Day because we had a day layover before going to Tahiti. Purchased tickets at Marriott and were picked up near hotel and transported to without a problem.
However, when it was time to return the nightmare began. Supposedly, the shuttle was to run every half hour. We arrived before 1:00PM. No shuttle at 1:00. No shuttle at 1:30.
By 1:45, four different parties were waiting. We all had to take $25 taxi rides to our hotels in order to catch our respective. Very disappointing and irresponsible. Definitely cannot recommend this service. Sorry that happened to you, must have been stressful.
Where were you waiting for the return shuttle? We're you at the MB Pier on Ocean Ave, or the new pickup spot at 9th and Manhattan Ave? What did the Marriott say, did they refund your fare?In all the years of seeing the two shuttles passing each other on Sepulveda Blvd, coming and going each half hour, I've only seen one once have trouble and the driver phoned the other shuttle for back up to pick up guests on his run. As we were sitting across the street at the bakery having a sandwich, we saw AAA come to restart the battery or whatever.Seems impossible that both shuttles were out of service at the same time.
They run every half hour, but not necessarily on the half hour, as there are other stops each way. Where did all of you find taxi's?Hope your and the rest of your trip was good.
