Repede is a good boy.Flair/banner images from,. For starters, if you're fine with games in Japanese, pick up and play Innocence R first. This reimagination is a big improvement over the original and deserves to be played (it kinda feels like a mini Vesperia) ^^. How does the remake fair against other tales games? The R games are rather low budget releases, their production has been outsourced and 7th Chord is responsible for their gameplay. Now, that's actually not a bad thing, these developpers understood the series well, and I would argue that these games tend to feel more focused and polished than some recent main titles of the series.
They're not flawless tho, for instance Hearts R has rather rigid animations and poor movement options (which is counterbalanced by Chase Link, a new mechanic that allow you to teleport). In term of general gameplay, while since Graces F the console games have dropped the worldmap and old style overworld, the R games still use that. As usual level design is not particularly good, but if you're nostalgic of this style, it's a +.
They also feature decent dungeons (especially Innocence R, Hearts R has the spirmaze issue, with samey dungeons that all look the same for kinda the first half of the game). In term of content, well it's decent, but it doesn't really match what most console games offer, so the game will probably feel shorter. Toby the secret mine achievement guide. In term of scenario, well you know Hearts. It's particularly cheesy. Imho, its writing is one of its flaws, the storyline is not super interesting or inspired.
Its themes aren't great too, and the mere concept of spiria is a pretty bad way to address issues of the characters (spiria is the cause of everything, it's a mess that mix notions of various field, I feel Yamamoto (the author) has a hard on for stuff like that or malevolence, they're imo shitty plot device that generate drama). I don't think the cast is particularly great too, I think Beryl gets the best development out of the bunch, she's a very human character but has sadly no plot relevance. Chal & Ines are fine too. The rest range from average to terrible imo.
On the positive note, romance is a thing in Hearts, which is kinda rare in the series.Long story short, I'd say fun gameplay but feel way cheeper. They're still the last game of the series with an old overworld + worldmap + vehicle, so just for that they're worth playing if you have some nostalgia for older games. Will the remake be a improvement over the original or worse off? (Combat Wise)The original Hearts was heavily inspired by Tales of Destiny PS2. It was in 2D,fast paced, with a summon system and a lot of feature (I believe it has the biggest official guide of the entire series, that thing is massive x)). It ofc had its flaws, and the evolution system could be frustrating since it locked you out of a third of the options available.Hearts R kinda fixes this last point, since you'll end up getting everything (Xillia style).
Combat wise, it's a mix of Xillia (TP & TC (CC) mix instead of EG & CG) and Innocence R (counter, secret missions etc.). Sadly it imo lacks personnality because it takes too much from these games.
While most original features of the original have been suppressed or nerfed (combination now kinda suck, you need to touch the portrait of a character in battle to have a vanilla cross attack, and late game some characters will unlock Dual MA if they're close enough), its only new exclusive feature is the Chase Link. A way to teleport directly to your target, and to make it entirely passive for few seconds (it also allows to instant cast debuff & offensive spells), it makes the gameplay very dynamic, and the game is as aerial focused than the original.Otherwise the R games have a very detailed AI system, with gambit like options, so they probably the most customizable options of the entire series. Hearts R also allow a large variety of different inputs, the game will give you the combo command accessory, and another accessory to have access to an arte tree like feature. You can use the touch screen to use artes and you can put artes instead of your normal attacks. I'm not a fan of the controls of the Vita tho, and the PSTV prevent you to use some features:/Lastly the game has 2 new playable characters:.
Gall, a mysterious oldman that uses a Bladerang and some Earth & Fire spells (some AoE heal too). Think Malik but with an emphasis on his physical moveset and greater control over the movement of his weapon. His gameplay is great but plays little to no role in the story (what they did with that character was really awkward. And it doesn't even make the Triverse Gate story line progress) and is honestly poorly developped. Chalecedony (finally!).
A magic knight with light artes & spells, wings (emphasis on aerials) & solo targeted heal. Definitely a great addition both gameplay and story wise. Sadly they didn't add Pyrox, Peridot or Lithia. I'm not sure what they were thinking, they were imo pretty much straightforward characters to add to a reimagination.Combat wise, the game is rather good and dynamic. Scenario wise I think R makes things worse than they were, which is imo, an issue. Gameplay wise, it feels less unique and cheaper.
Hearts DS went back to 2D to have more control over a bunch of stuff and fit the DS hardware properly, I feel Hearts R kinda lacked that vision. They actually released a bonus 2D game with Hearts R's first print called, it was fun to play and kinda reminded me the original (because it had the summon system for instance).I suggest you watch some gameplay videos to have an idea of how they transfomed the game. I don't know if you'll like it, but it's rather popular for its combat in the US (less in Japan and Europe from what I gathered). It also gets a lot of love for being a Vita exclusive (well. It's supposed to be available on iOS, but who cares). I'd rate the combat as the second best of all Tales games actually, number 1 being Xillia 2.
I feel it's really balanced, fluid and fast paced. As a whole, the game was an enjoyable experience. I'd rate it mid tier because of the awkward English translation is and the story being somewhat generic.
It's good, but wouldn't put it in my top 5.Just my extra thoughts: Is it worth getting a Vita just to play that one game? I'd say no, but getting a Vita is worth it anyway. There's some nice games on there like Gravity Rush, Danganronpa, Steins gate and Zero escape. Getting a vita got me into Visual novels and puzzle solving games. They simply feel better to play and read on portable devices. Yeah I know, why i said the last sentence.
I just think they are much better on Vita or any other handheld. Gravity Rush was made for the Vita exclusively, utilizing the touch screen and other features. Playing any visual novel or puzzle game is always better on a handheld, or portable device. It doesn't feel comfortable sitting in a chair and simply reading from the big screen all day.
I personally like to lie down and relax while reading or playing something that doesn't involve a lot of action. Portability is the Vita's main selling point.
