The 2019 season was always going to be a rough one for the rebuilding Baltimore Orioles. And indeed, things have played out that way so far.

They entered Tuesday night on a 13-game losing streak at Camden Yards to the visiting New York Yankees, who on Monday night against them set an MLB record for single-season home runs at a visiting park.

But things might have reached a nadir on Tuesday night as they witnessed one of their prospects leave the game early after taking a ball to the head following a misplay on a fly ball.

DJ Stewart, a 2015 first-round pick of the Orioles who has spent the bulk of the season in the minor leagues, found himself on the unfortunate end of the highlight reel as he charged in from left field to try to make a tough play on a fly ball in the fourth inning.

Whether he fell, or simply mistimed his slide, Stewart went down too early, and saw the ball come straight down and hit him on the side of the head.

Stewart remained in the game for the duration of the half inning but was removed for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Orioles said after the game that Stewart suffered a concussion on the play.

The play instantly brought to mind Jose Canseco's infamous ball-off-his-head home run, though the head injury Stewart sustained removed the humor the longtime slugger's 1993 gaffe had.

The Orioles went on to lose 9-4, running their home losing streak vs. the Yankees to 14 games while watching the Bronx Bombers add to their record with six more home runs. Flight rising app.
