Wood floors add upscale appeal to almost any room -- and a lot of unwanted racket from clicking heels, scampering dogs, squeaky floorboards and rambunctious kids. The annoying noises are actually from sound waves bouncing around in the room. So, when you interrupt the sound waves, you can make the space much quieter. Add textiles in a variety of creative ways to break up the reverberating sound waves and give yourself some peace and quiet.

Walls and Windows

Add a few fabric wall hangings, such as attractive quilts, colorful tapestries or woven rugs, to bare walls to absorb some of the sounds resulting from wooden floors. Alternatively, you can install fabric-covered wall panels over one or more of your existing walls to soak up a good deal of irritating floor noise. Hang draperies over the windows to take in some of the unwanted sound waves that are bouncing around a room. Thick drapery material -- velvet, tapestry, suede -- draws in more noise than lightweight fabrics, such as cotton, lace or linen. Add a fabric liner to your draperies to increase the sound absorption.

Furniture

Furnish a room that has wooden floors with upholstered pieces to help reduce the noise level. For example, chairs, sofas, ottomans, sectionals and headboards covered in heavy, plush fabrics, such as chenille, microfiber, corduroy or velveteen, help to make a room quieter. Add cozy furniture throws, decorative toss pillows and woven tablecloths to layer the sound-absorbing potential. Attach seat and back cushions or slip covers to dining room chairs to soften the sounds created by wood flooring.

Floors

If you haven't installed your wood flooring yet, pick out a quality underlayment to cushion the wood floors. A thick underlayment makes walking more comfortable and helps remove more of the annoying clatter than a thinner underlayment does. For existing wood floors, place posh area rugs over them to anchor furniture groupings and help reduce floor noise. Eliminate the bothersome sounds caused by squeaky floorboards to make a room quieter. The squeaks become noticeable when you walk across a wooden floor where the floor boards have shrunk and dried, causing the boards to rub against each other. When you drive a screw or nail between the squeaky boards or into an adjoining joist, it keeps the boards from rubbing against one another.

Additional Tips

Wear soft-soled slippers or socks, or go barefoot inside your house to eliminate the noise of shoes clattering across wooden floors. If you have a dog that stays indoors, keep his toenails clipped to get rid of the perpetual clicking sounds against the wood. Add acoustical tiles or an acoustical spray coating over your existing ceiling to lessen the room noise created by wooden floors. You can also add fabric-covered false beams to a vaulted or towering ceiling to diminish room noise. These false beams are fashioned with fabric-covered fiberglass, and have a high level of acoustical absorption.
